Blest Be The Tie That Binds

by Gary Colley

The apostle John, "the disciple of love," recorded the words of our Lord, saying, "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another" (Jn. 13:34). Jesus proved His love by teaching these men and by His willing sacrifice for sin on the cruel cross. By having this sacrificial, self-denying love, His disciples would be identified as belonging to the Lord. This love was to distinguish them from the world, who lived in the "lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life" (I Jn. 2:15-17). Jesus was about to leave the apostles, and He knew that the great work on which they were about to embark and accomplish in the world of carrying the Gospel to all nations would demand their love for one another as well as the lost (Mk. 16:15-16). Love in the Bible is expressed in concern and interest for others. Today, we are to have concern and interest in other Christians, the Bible, the church, in teaching the lost, and in upholding and transmitting the Truth to the future. The work they had to do has been passed on to all Christians today (Mt. 28:20; II Tim. 2:2).

The glue that holds the people of God together today is love. "Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love"! Some in the religious world want to be known by wearing no makeup, long hair in a bun, plain dress, etc. These are not the marks of the disciples of the Lord. But, love is that badge of discipleship. Let each of us "adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things" (Tit. 2:10).

Alabama churches of Christ is a Christian website with lots of articles, the KJV Bible, a church directory and more!

Here's a brief look at what the churches of Christ believe...

  • We believe that the Church should speak where the Bible speaks and remain silent where the Bible is silent.
  • The Bible teaches that we must have the authority of Christ for whatever we practice or teach (Colossians 3:17).
  • Worship services should be conducted strictly in accordance with the scriptural patterns set forth in the New Testament.

The New Testament makes no mention of mechanical instrumental music being used in the early church, as such we do not use them in our worship today. Instead we sing "a cappella" (singing without mechanical instruments). MUSIC IN WORSHIP by Raymond Elliott is a good article on this subject.

"Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;" (Ephesians 5:19).
