Lit'l Bits...
Urgent

As he was filling out an employment application, a man paused over this question: "Person to notify in case of an accident."

Finally he wrote, "Anybody in sight."

“Clutter?”

Selected

Have you ever had one of those weeks where you got nothing done that you wanted to get done? Phone ringing off the hook, printer breaks down, computer mysteries, two hour waits in the doctor’s office -- interruptions seemed endless. The week you had planned never happened.

On Mondays, my favorite activity is to clear off my desk, file sermon notes, re-shelve books, pay some bills, put the dirty coffee cups in the kitchen sink and return phone calls. There is always much left to do, but at least I look organized for a moment. It revives my soul to clear off the clutter.

Our lives become cluttered too, don’t they? Yards to mow, homework to turn in, proposals at work that absolutely must be finished tonight, cleaning up the garage, playing taxi for adolescents -- the list is endless. With everything that has to be done, we don’t have time for those things we would like to do. Just thinking about the list of responsibilities makes me tired.

When I begin to feel this way, I return to a verse in the first chapter of Mark. Jesus has just begun his public ministry and the crush is on. Everyone wants to hear him, be healed by him, touch him. After an exhausting day of healing and teaching, we are told:

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed.” ~ Mark 1:35

Jesus spent time with his Father. He prayed. We can be so busy that we forget to pray or rather don’t make time to pray. When our lives are that cluttered it’s time to clear off the desk.

Matthew 6:6
But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
