Have you ever felt like you faced some ongoing problem in your life that you just couldn't overcome, or had a goal that you just couldn't achieve? In Matthew 19, the disciples came to a stark realization of the impossibility of their reaching heaven on their own efforts. Jesus' reply -- "With man this IS impossible, but with God ALL things are possible." All things. Have you ever thought about the promise that statement holds?
Two chapters later Jesus makes another bold assertion that expands on this thought. "If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer." God says, "Ask me, I want to give you what you most desperately want." In this He's not encouraging us to take a kid-in-the-candy-store approach, asking for every whim we have. He's telling us to search deep and ask for what we REALLY want. Paul tells the Philippians "...by prayer and petition...the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." In the end, isn't God's peace what we so desperately crave? Peace from sin in our lives. Peace from failure to reach our spiritual goals. Peace from broken relationships here on Earth. Peace from day-to-day struggles that can overwhelm us. Isaiah tells us in 26:3, "You (God) will keep in perfect peace, him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in You."
As you go about your life, keep in mind that there is one and only one way to the peace that we so desperately want -- through a total reliance on God. Pray earnestly that God grant you the peace to cope, to overcome, to win the battles that you face. Through prayer and a complete reliance on God, "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength; they will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." (Is. 40:31) Need a lift?
