Jesus used parables many times to teach great lessons. A parable is a comparison, literally, "that which is cast along side of." Jesus used this method by comparing things in the everyday world. In Luke 8:4-8, Jesus presents the parable of the four different kinds of soil to the multitude. Verse 9 indicates that they did not understand the meaning of the parable so Jesus gives an explanation in verses 11-15.
I do not want to analyze the parable in this article, but I do want us to get several lessons from it. Verse 11 says, "The seed is the Word of God." In every case the Word of God was sown. Romans 10:17 says that faith comes by hearing the Word of God. The pure seed and nothing but the seed was sown. The problem was the type of soil (heart) that this good seed fell upon. Let each of us be certain that we are only sowing this good seed.
Another lesson learned is from verse 5, "a sower went out to sow." The seed will not sow itself, there must be a sower. Today, Christians sow this seed in our community. The seed (Word) in its purity with no mixture will fall on good soil only if it is sown. Are you sowing the seed of the kingdom?
